What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?
A plain-English guide to GEO — the practice of optimizing your website so AI search engines and large language models can find, understand, and recommend your store.
For two decades, every ecommerce founder learned the same playbook: write keyword-rich pages, earn backlinks, and pray Google ranks you on page one. That playbook is breaking. More than 30% of shoppers now start a product search inside ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, or another AI assistant instead of a traditional search engine. When they do, the AI doesn't return ten blue links — it returns a single recommended answer.
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of making sure your store is the answer.
Why GEO is different from SEO
Classic SEO is a competition for rank — get one of the top spots and traffic flows. GEO is a competition for citation — get quoted in the AI's answer and traffic flows. The difference matters because AI models don't read the web the way Googlebot does. They look for:
- Machine-readable facts. Structured data (Product, Review, Organization schema) so the model can extract price, stock, and rating with zero ambiguity.
- Direct, quotable copy. Product descriptions written in clear sentences a model can lift verbatim, not marketing fluff.
- Explicit crawler permission. A correct
robots.txt, anllms.txt, and meta tags that let GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, and friends in. - Topical authority. Content that demonstrably covers a subject deeply — not thin keyword pages.
- Trust signals. Reviews, return policy, shipping info, and an "About" page the model can use to decide if you're a credible recommendation.
The five dimensions GEOde scores
When you run a GEOde audit, we evaluate your store across the five things every major AI engine looks at:
- Crawlability — Can AI bots reach and render your pages?
- Structured data — Are your products described in JSON-LD?
- Content quality — Are descriptions specific, factual, and original?
- Technical readiness — Speed, canonical tags, hreflang, sitemap freshness.
- Shopping signals — Price, availability, reviews, and product identifiers in a machine-readable format.
What changes when you optimize for GEO
The signals you fix for GEO are mostly invisible to a human visitor — but they're decisive for an AI engine deciding whether to mention your brand in an answer like "best running shoes for flat feet" or "what's a good gift for a sourdough enthusiast." The stores that start fixing these signals now will be the default recommendations a year from now.
The fastest way to find out where you stand is to run a free audit — it takes 60 seconds and shows you exactly which of the five dimensions are holding you back.
